Clout and Influence
Alderman Burnett defeated then incumbent Dexter Watson for 27th Ward Alderman in 1995. As a young man, Burnett was convicted of bank robbery at the age of 17. Originally from from the Cabrini Green housing project, Burnett was a protege of 42nd Ward Democratic Committeeman and Cook County Democratic Party Chairman George Dunne as well as Illinois Secretary of State and 27th Ward Democratic Committeeman Jesse White. Aided by White's significant control of state jobs, and the ability to raise significant funds in his fast-gentrifying ward, Burnett's political organization has been a significant force on Chicago's West and Near North Sides for in recent election cycles.
His father is Democratic precinct captain Walter Burnett Sr. and his wife is Darlene Williams-Burnett, currently a 7th Congressional District State Central Committeewoman, one-time candidate for Cook County Board, and current Deputy Cook County Recorder of Deeds.
